Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where are you located?
A. Onomea Federal Credit Union is located at 27-251 Old Mamalahoa Hwy. in Papaikou, Hawaii.

Q. Will the credit union ever call or email me to request personal account information?
A. No. This is referred to as "phishing" and is done by con artists who use the information to steal your identity. Onomea Federal Credit Union will never call or e-mail you to ask for personal information. We already have the information in our files. Phishers can be thwarted by taking some simple precautions:

  • Do not give out financial information, such as checking account and credit card numbers or your Social Security number to anyone, unless you initiated the contact and know how the information will be used.
  • Do not respond to suspicious phone or e-mail inquiries asking for account information to "verify a statement" or "award a prize." If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Be careful with your debit/ATM card, PIN and receipts. Don't just throw away old records or unwanted solicitation for credit cards or loans — shred them first.

More information on identity theft and phishing can be found in Money Smart.

Q. Is my money safe in the credit union?
A. Absolutely. Your deposits are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the federal government and backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Government. Your Individual Retirement Account is insured separately, up to $250,000.

Q. Is a credit union a bank?
A. No. Onomea Federal Credit Union offers a variety of financial services similar to those a bank provides, but its primary purpose is service to members, not profit for stockholders. Governed by a volunteer board of directors and owned by its members, a credit union is a financial cooperative, whose only reason for existing is member service.

Q. What if I move or change jobs?
A. Our long-standing policy is: “Once a member, always a member.”  After you join, you may remain a member for life, even if you change jobs, retire or move away. It's easy to stay in touch. With ATMs and our online branch, the credit union is at your fingertips.
